The annual TOC Europe conference wrapped up in Rotterdam earlier this summer, spotlighting port health and safety as a critical pillar of maritime operational excellence.
Featuring over 4,500 attendees, this year’s event hosted a vibrant Safety Village, backed by TT Club and ICHCA, which showcased cutting-edge risk-management tools and solutions for cargo handling environments.
Speakers engaged in a forward-looking session titled “Investing in Safety Innovation, Technology & Equipment,” where the industry’s shift from reactive to predictive safety models in port operations was a key theme. They emphasised how new technologies, backed by a culture of safety, are transforming port management—not as expenses, but business enablers.
Portwise also contributed insights at the Safety Village, with Principal Consultant Dr. Isabelle van Schilt exploring the role of psychological safety in strengthening port safety cultures. She argued that empowering frontline staff to speak up when spotting hazards is just as essential as protocols and equipment.
Other innovations on display included Continental’s smart tire and digital solutions, designed to enhance safety, efficiency and sustainability in port logistics, as part of a broader drive toward digitalisation and risk reduction.
As operational pressures increase, TOC Europe 2025 provided a timely reminder: port safety relies on technology, proactive cultures, and human-centred design. Incident management may no longer depend solely on reaction—it’s increasingly about anticipation.
