The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) is urging employers in the haulage and logistics sector to take action to prevent slips, trips and falls among workers.

The call coincides with the launch of a proactive, on site inspection programme beginning in July 2026.

HSENI inspectors will examine the measures employers have in place to manage risks associated with slips, trips and falls until the end of March 2027.

Inspectors will also provide employers with information and advice on reducing these risks.

Logistics workers face risks

Slips, trips and falls are among the most common causes of workplace injury and can result in serious harm, including fractures, sprains and long term absence.

Workers operating in busy environments such as warehouses, yards and delivery routes can face particular risks from uneven surfaces, spillages, poor housekeeping and inadequate lighting.

Avoidable hazards highlighted

HSENI said incidents involving slips, trips and falls often result from avoidable hazards, including wet or contaminated floors, trailing cables, damaged flooring and poorly maintained access routes.

Many incidents can be prevented through effective risk assessments and practical control measures.

Employers reminded of legal duties

Employers have a legal duty to assess the risks of slips, trips and falls before eliminating or reducing them to as low a level as is reasonably practicable.

Where inspectors identify significant risks, HSENI may take enforcement action to secure compliance with health and safety legislation.

HSENI Principal Inspector Kellie McNamara said: “The movement of almost all goods in Northern Ireland involves road transport”.

“We are urging employers in the haulage and logistics sector to work with us to reduce work-related injuries caused by slips, trips and falls”.

“Taking simple steps such as maintaining good housekeeping, ensuring safe walking surfaces and identifying hazards early can prevent serious and potentially life-changing injuries.”
