A deadly fire in the South Korean port city of Yeosu has left one man dead and two crew members injured after a tanker and a small cargo vessel caught alight while anchored.
The blaze, which began in the early hours of 16 August, took nearly seven hours to bring under control as authorities battled flames on the 2,692-tonne tanker carrying 2,500 tonnes of toxic chemicals and 100 tonnes of fuel oil, alongside a moored cargo ship.
All 18 crew members were rescued, but the master of the cargo vessel — a man in his 50s — was later confirmed dead. Two Myanmar nationals aboard the tanker sustained injuries, one serious.
The Yeosu Coast Guard deployed 15 vessels and a fireboat as part of a joint operation with fire authorities amid fears of explosion. Investigators are continuing to probe the cause of the fire while taking measures to prevent secondary damage.
