Blackline Safety has announced a partnership with MFE Inspection Solutions to integrate its cloud-connected portable gas detector with Boston Dynamics’ Spot mobile industrial robot.
The solution extends connected gas detection into robotic workflows, allowing gas readings, alerts and location data to be sent instantly to remote monitoring teams before personnel enter potentially hazardous areas.
Robotic gas detection for hazardous environments

“Robots like Spot are already being used to collect inspection data remotely in hazardous environments. This solution adds real-time gas detection to those workflows, giving operators insight into gas hazards before deciding how and when to send people in.”
Connected safety data in real time
Industrial gas monitoring has traditionally relied on personal monitors worn by workers. Connected gas detection expands this model by combining data from personal monitors, area monitors and remote systems such as robots or drones.
Operators can view gas readings and alerts through Blackline Safety’s Blackline Live software and directly on the Spot tablet during operation.
Automated safety response
The system can trigger automated return-to-home actions when defined gas thresholds, including rising LEL levels, are detected. This helps move Spot out of hazardous conditions and improves protection for site personnel.
The solution supports hot-swappable, configurable cartridge-based sensors for different environments. Oil and gas operators can monitor methane or LEL conditions, semiconductor facilities can detect ammonia, and chemical processing plants can monitor hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide or sulfur dioxide.
Deployment support
MFE will support deployment by helping customers assess site needs, configure gas detection setups, train personnel and integrate the system into existing safety and inspection workflows.
