Middle-aged men who work in small businesses are most at risk of being killed from falling at work.
An assessment of over 800 fatal accidents in Germany conducted by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) shows fatal accidents caused by falls happen the most during construction and assembly work.

More than 70% of the accidents recorded between 2009 and 2025 happened at micro or small enterprises.
The BAuA review shows organisational deficiencies, incomplete risk assessments and unsuitable work equipment often contribute to accidents.
Routine but risky ways of working also play a role, particularly among older or more experienced employees who have developed dangerous routines.
Lack of Risk Assessments Contributes to Workplace Accidents
In more than a third of the reported fall accidents (263), no risk assessment was available at the time of the accident.
Following an accident, 534 of 811 participating companies updated the risk assessment.
In Germany, unlike the employers’ liability insurance associations, there is no legal obligation to report to the BAuA.
The agency says careful, comprehensive risk assessments, a selection of suitable work equipment and safe work environment are all key to prevent fatal falls.
